Hi, I'm Kairis! Since 1999, I've been serving my community as a professional and community doula through Baby Got Back Up Birth Support Services. Hi, I'm Kairis! Since 1999, I've served my community as a professional and community doula through Baby Got Back Up Birth Support Services. My personal mission is to lower infant and maternal mortality and morbidity in the African American community by increasing the number of culturally competent birth workers, helping them grow their businesses, and mentoring them in civic engagement. I began my practice as a birth coach in Sacramento, and today I serve English- and Spanish-speaking families across the region's 14 hospitals and birth centers. This work is truly my calling, guided by my motto: there are a million unplanned pregnancies, but there never, ever has to be an unplanned birth, the only qualification for needed doula support is past, present, or future pregnancy.
Armed with data from serving over 150 families through Blue Shield of California's pilot program from 2021 to 2023, I now lead Children of the Sun BP Doula Project, Inc., a 501(c)(3) honoring my father's legacy. With a vision of "a doula on every block," my team and I train and certify community members as doulas, and I'm especially proud of our male doulas, who support fathers as advocates in birth settings.
I'm a proud member of California's Medicaid Doula Benefit Co-Design team, Co-Lead the IMI National Learning and Action Collaborative's Doula CA statewide team, Chair the Californians Advancing Midwifery Board of Directors, and serve on the Foundation Board for the Capital Black Chamber of Commerce.
Beyond birth work, I'm an Elder ordained by Grace Communion International, serving as a Senior Pastor. For self-care, you'll find me on trail rides with my fellow Black Cowboys and Cowgirls, the Loyalty Riderz. Known as the "Doula Cowgirl in Heels," I compete in West Coast horse shows with my two horses, Namib and Nyeusi Zuri, because fun and self-care are necessary in a world crying out for systems change.
My philosophy is that the body always knows best. It's always communicating, and what it shares isn't good or bad; it's information. We build support around that information. I trust birthing bodies and their intuition implicitly.
My personal preferences have no place in another person's experience or health care decisions. I am 100% committed to supporting the experience at hand, yours, exactly as you envision it.
My phone is on day and night, from antenatal through postpartum, for anyone needing an experienced advocate, labor coach, community health worker, and perinatal friend.
Overall, my goal is to walk beside you with unwavering commitment, trusting your body, honoring your choices, and making sure you never have to navigate this journey alone.
