Skills Outside Health Plan, DHCS, and DMHC Defined Benefit

Doulas may have many skills. Only some of those skills are covered under the Medi-Cal or commercial insurance doula benefit.

Covered services and non-covered services must never be mixed in documentation or billing.

Services Outside the Doula Benefit

Some Raya Health doulas hold additional certifications or provide other services beyond non-medical doula support. These may include, but are not limited to:

  • Childbirth education classes, group or individual
  • Lactation consulting as a licensed IBCLC or similar
  • Massage therapy or bodywork beyond basic comfort measures
  • Mental health counseling or therapy
  • Homeopathy, herbal therapy, prescribing supplements, or alternative health practices
  • Private coaching or consulting
  • Abdominal binding or belly wrapping as a therapeutic intervention
  • Reiki, energy healing, or spiritual healing session
  • Aromatherapy used as a treatment vs general comfort
  • Placenta encapsulation, ingestion, or preparation; placental burial ceremonies
  • Vaginal steaming—Yoni steaming or traditional
  • Infant massage instruction billed as therapy
  • Tongue tie assessments
  • Photography or videography

If it is deemed necessary to include something in the medical chart, here is an example of how this could be documented:

"Patient asked about placenta encapsulation. Provided emotional support and encouraged discussion with clinical provider. Shared non-directive information and respected patient preferences. Services will be arranged and paid for outside Raya Health."
